In
Broken Dolls by Michelle Dutch, I was taken on an intense, high-stakes
journey filled with suspense, mysticism, and danger. The book centres on Mary
McKenzie, a famous author, and Matthew Michael Gryffin, an FBI profiler, as
they find themselves caught up in a tense chase with a cunning serial killer
known as the "Skinwalker." This hunt takes them from the frigid
Alaskan ocean to the spiritual heartlands of the Hopi and Navajo tribes.
Alongside them is Hege Andreason, an ex-agent with secrets of her own, whose
motivations add suspense to the plot. As Gryffin closes in on the killer, he
finds himself facing off not only with the Skinwalker but also with a brujo, a
figure steeped in dark folklore, whose powers unsettle the local community and
ultimately turn the case into a race against time. As Gryffin unravels the mystery, the
story plunges into the dark, mystic underworld of crime, where each decision
could mean life or death.
Unforgettable scenes throughout
the book show Dutch’s talent for creating suspense. Gryffin’s eventual
kidnapping is a key moment, showing his vulnerability as he becomes a prisoner
in the very case he is leading. Meanwhile, local agents Tom Evehema and Deputy
Talayumptewa, connected deeply to the Hopi community, add realism to the story,
grounding it in the sacredness of their land, even as danger creeps in.
What stands out in Broken
Dolls is its fast pace and vivid setting. Dutch has created a story full
of suspense, building up the tension as Gryffin and McKenzie’s paths cross.
Their ally, Hege Andreason, a mysterious former agent with her motives, adds
even more intrigue. Her hidden reasons and knowledge of the dark web’s shady
world give the plot depth and surprise, keeping readers on edge. As the trio
goes deeper into this dangerous world, Gryffin’s skills and McKenzie’s sharp
observations work well together, making them a fascinating team.
I would give Broken Dolls
a solid five out of five stars. The editing is excellent, with no mistakes to
take away from the story. Michelle Dutch’s careful detail in both dialogue and
description kept me completely hooked in this fast-paced thriller. The
characters’ interactions and the story's mystical touches make this book
exciting and unique, fully deserving of the top rating.
I strongly recommend Broken
Dolls to anyone who enjoys thrillers with a hint of the supernatural or
mysteries that explore culture and spirituality. This book would appeal to
readers who like suspenseful, character-focused stories with supernatural and
mythological themes.
